According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Sulphur has roughly 23,000 residents and about 93% of those residents identify themselves as white. The rest of the population includes African-Americans, Native Americans, Asians, and Hispanics.

The Charpentier Historic District boasts 40 blocks of buildings and homes paying homage to the carpenters who built the homes. These carpenters, often referred to as carpenter architects, were forced to also design the homes that they built because the area lacked the resources or money to hire a professional architect. 

 

Most of the McNeese University students and faculty reside in the Southwestern Lake Charles metropolitan area close to the university, the Municipal Airport and area restaurants. The Northeastern area encompasses both the Garden District and the Memorial Hospital.
