History
 
The city was founded in 1870 for the dual purpose of mining the area for sulphur deposits and as a stop along the Louisiana Western Railroad. German, Canadians, and Northerners relocated to the area for mining and forestry jobs. In 1924 sulphur mining ceased and in 1925 the last of the pine was cut. The citizens of Sulphur quickly began to look for new sources of commerce. Utilizing its central location, and the two area railroads Sulphur quickly turned to construction and transportation to secure its financial future. 
 
Economy
 
Today Sulphur is home to major plastic manufacturer Westlake Polymers, industrial construction and pipe manufacturer Turner Industries Group LLC, and oil giants Conoco, CITGO and Westlake Petro. In addition to working in the oil industry and manufacturing plants, Sulphur residents are employed in the healthcare industry, construction, chemical industry, or educational services industry. The median family income in the city is $45,455.00 and male residents out earn female residents by 58%. 

 
Things to Do and See 
 
As a part of the Lake Charles metropolitan area, Sulphur is a short drive to casinos including the luxurious L’Auberge Du Lac Hotel and Casino or the boisterous Isle of Capri. Museums in the area include the Children’s Museum of Lake Charles, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum and the Black Heritage Art Gallery. The Frasch Golf Course offers a public course named in honor of one of the town’s most famous residents. 
 
The first two weeks of May the area hosts the Contraband Days celebrating the area’s history with live bands, Cajun food, and family fun. Other yearly celebrations include the Cajun Music and Food Festival, s Sci-Fi Convention, and a Red, White, Blue and You 4th of July Celebration. 
 
Area attractions include the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road. Recognized as a National Scenic Byway Designation, the Creole Nature Trail boasts 180 miles of marshland and bayous and 7 sandy beaches located along the Gulf of Mexico. With a quick stop at Sulphur City Hall to get the proper licenses, visitors of the trail can also fish and hunt. 
 
Crime
 
Every year the city holds an annual Night Out Against Crime to promote community involvement as a crime deterrent. The event also allows local resident to meet police officers and city officials. The event also encourages fire and drug prevention. The city boasts a very safe city with no homicides in the last 4 years and 65 full-time police officers. The city does have some non-violent crime with a few incidents of theft and burglary.
